A Low Rider Toe
I thought I’d write a bit about my Twenty 20 bat the SAF Fatboy and the theory behind it…. Take a deep breath I’m starting straight into the Techie stuff…
A Shorter Cricket Bat Blade
By extending the handle and shortening the blade you are lowering the placement of the pivot point [centre of mass]. This in turn will result in a higher mass moment of inertia of the bat.
You’re thinking “That was quick thanks see you next time you write something”…. Hold on there is more!
The Low Toe Theory
Ummm your on a merri-go-round and you stand at the end then your weight is propelled around faster [greater momentum] then if you stand in the middle. By moving the weight of the bat further down it has greater momentum then if it is was distributed around the blade….
So in SAF Fatboy terms there is more weight at the toe end of the cricket bat based on longer handle shorter blade thing.
A good idea is….
So when go for a Twenty 20 [T20] bat with a low, low middle it is a good idea to choose a lighter weight bat. Why? well a 2lb 8oz bat will probably pickup around 2lb 10oz but you will generate a slightly faster swing speed and the bat will have a greater momentum becasue of the way it is weighted…. They can be made to pickup really well mind you!!! I am talking about the big wide world here….
The Techie bit on lighter bats
When you choose a light bat you are technically allowing for an increase in bat speed which you can manoeuvre better. Because of these things it gives you a bit more time to select your shot and play the shot better. [incidently a lower weighted bat will have a lower mass moment of interia]
There is a point where there is only a small percentage decrease in batted ball speed offset against bat weight and bat speed. That is, by squeezing out a faster bat swing speed with a heavier bat the batted ball is only going to go that little bit faster as you have reached that point on the curve where it starts to straighten out [it's one of those exponential curves things] [Oh no ignore this bit]
I hope that makes sense
